Work – Backgrounds
My paintings and ropes give the impression of liquid processes that arise and flow away. They seem to consist of unstable elements that have to do with an undertone that resounds in our current society.
According to the sociologist Zygmunt Bauman, these modern times are fluid, flexible and uncertain. Everything is constantly changing. This time is fragmentary and depends on short projects, which hardly form a coherent whole.
My work is related to this realization. I do not give an opinion, nor a solution or a future perspective. It is a guiding thought that occupies me strongly on all kinds of levels (current affairs, philosophy of life, work)
and which offers me clarity. For me it is a guiding fact that also takes shape in my works. This changeability takes on different shapes and dimensions, both in my painted work and in the more abstract ropeworks.
I use shapes in drawings and paintings, which may be borrowed from reality, but which form their own interplay. They lead a life of their own.
I use principles such as wild growth, deformation, loss of shape: such as in a natural disaster, a landfill or the accumulating ice in a freezer compartment. Topics that have to do with the now: and then exactly at the turning point where man loses his grip on the world. As if it were about the start of processes that herald our possible demise and impress us with the objective fact that nature will always take its course.
I transform this fact into an airy whole with its own dynamics.
My rope and textile works contain an internal dynamic. They arise as a constant succession of various constructions. The process of creation can be observed in the work. Countless sequential, logical and illogical decisions are made, with everything in permanent contact with previously completed sections. Sometimes they literally move along. In this way, both the creation of the work and the result are fluid: all elements influence each other constantly and are in motion.
I try to capture natural processes, which are erratic and unpredictable. Yet each work has its own logic and its own way of creating. I direct my own intuition. In rope and textile works I use the old techniques such as knotting, weaving and embroidery. In some works, tribal figures can appear and on the spot merge into modernist fragments. Organic forms, landscape and more abstract expressions coexist in my oeuvre.
I relate to the world around me and understand the world through self-created systems, which are expressed in paintings and textile works. In these systems, principles of order and chaos alternate. Harmonious and dissonant parts can make connections with each other. Separate parts and open fragments with holes can form an equal part of the structure and composition of the work.
